Driving Growth from Within: Professional Development Through XKIG’s CDL Program

At XKIG, professional development starts with understanding the responsibility behind the work we do, especially when it comes to operating the heavy equipment that keeps our crews moving.

A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV). Driving a CMV demands a significantly higher level of knowledge, skill, experience, and physical ability than driving a standard car or pickup truck. To earn a CDL, applicants must pass rigorous knowledge and skills testing that reflects these elevated standards.

CDL holders are also held to a higher level of accountability, even when operating non-commercial vehicles. Serious traffic violations can impact their ability to maintain their certification. In short, earning a CDL isn’t just about driving a bigger truck; it’s about meeting a higher professional standard.

At XKIG, that standard matters. In 2025 alone, 110 employees earned their CDL through our internal program, a reflection of both the demand for growth within our teams and our commitment to investing in their development.

Training Drivers, Strengthening Our Mission

For the past three years, Tim Haynes has led XKIG’s CDL Program as the CDL Coordinator and certified DMV CDL Examiner. He conducts the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) classroom portion of the program and administers the official DMV CDL exam in Hamlet, NC. Once employees successfully pass, they return to their home state to pick up their new CDL license, streamlining the process and keeping the certification journey efficient and accessible.

Tim brings extensive experience to the role. He has logged over 3 million safe driving miles with no tickets or accidents and has been teaching CDL training for more than eight years. He is also a Senior Master CDL Instructor through the Commercial Vehicle Training Association, reinforcing the professionalism and credibility behind XKIG’s program.

“We need qualified, safe drivers within our field teams,” Tim explains. “That ensures we can fulfill our mission every day: getting equipment and crews to the job site safely and being prepared to respond to storms.”

The program reinforces XKIG’s safety culture at every step. While employees work toward obtaining their license, Tim emphasizes developing safer driving habits overall.

“My goal isn’t just to help them get their CDL,” he says. “It’s to help them become better, safer drivers, both at work and in their personal vehicles.”

Driving a CDL truck requires a completely different level of maneuvering, inspection discipline, and regulatory knowledge. That training translates directly into safer job sites and stronger field operations.

Opening Doors for Career Opportunities

Earning a CDL opens new doors at XKIG.

With a CDL, employees can operate a wider range of equipment used in field operations. That expanded capability increases their opportunities for advancement and leadership.

“By earning a CDL, employees can move up within the company,” Tim says. “They also receive a raise and bonus for obtaining their CDL.”

Perhaps one of the most meaningful aspects of the program is that XKIG offers it to employees at no cost. Many participants have shared that they always wanted to earn their CDL but were previously limited by the cost of outside programs.

By removing that barrier, XKIG makes professional growth accessible to those willing to put in the effort.

Dedication, Growth, and Accomplishment

The journey to earning a CDL requires commitment. After completing classroom instruction, employees must obtain their permit, study for the pre-trip inspection and skills evaluations, and prepare thoroughly for the CDL DMV exam.

“It takes time and effort,” Tim explains. “You have to be ready to pass the skills evaluation and the DMV testing.”

That effort pays off in a moment Tim describes as the most rewarding part of his role.

“Employees are nervous, sometimes scared, when they come to take the DMV test,” he says. “But when I tell them they’ve earned their CDL, the look of accomplishment on their face is beyond words.”

That moment represents more than passing an exam. It reflects perseverance, confidence, and the beginning of expanded opportunity.

Looking Ahead

Tim hopes to see the CDL program grow even stronger in the next five years to be more streamlined, expanded, and capable of supporting a broader range of CDL classes with additional truck and trailer types.

He also hopes the program continues to strengthen employee retention by offering a clear pathway for advancement within XKIG.

Investing in People, Elevating Performance

XKIG’s CDL Program represents more than compliance training. It’s a professional development pathway that:

  • Reinforces our safety-first culture
  • Builds internal talent and leadership
  • Removes barriers to advancement
  • Creates long-term career growth

When we invest in our people, we strengthen every crew, every job site, and every community we serve.

Professional development isn’t just about training; it’s about empowering employees to build careers they’re proud of.

And at XKIG, that’s exactly the point.
